Lifehouse Deaf School - Obala, Cameroon
Lifehouse School & Orphanage for the Deaf was founded in 2004 as an officially registered non-profit, charity in Obala, Cameroon by Andre Christophe Bikund. The purpose of LifeHouse is to provide a loving family atmosphere in which the deaf are educated and given opportunity to become productive members of society through vocational training. For most of the residents this is the first time in their lives they can communicate and the only time they have been valued as a person.
In 2011 Lifehouse left it's rented housing due to lost funding. A few months later, land was purchased with the help of Friends of the Deaf International. The next year (2012-2013) the land was cleared and a storage facility and two small classrooms were built. Even though the facilities were not completed it was decided school would begin on the property in September 2013 because the need is so great for the deaf to learn to communicate.
In March of 2014 building was begun on a residential building for students which is currently under construction.
Our goal is to complete the first floor of the dormitory by the fall of 2015 so as to allow the children and staff to move in and use the facility. Watch our video on the building project
